HISTORY OF THE DONNER PARTY, A Tragedy of the Sierras

Truckee: Crowley & McGlashan, 1879. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Item #xxx018

1st printing. Rebound in blue cloth with original decorative cover fabric of both boards and spine laid on. About one-half of the gilt title on spine is visible and can be read. 193pp. Decorative vignettes at top and end of each chapter. Rebound with new endpapers and adjacent blank leaves. The major flaw in this copy is that the title page was torn off entirely from about 1" in from the gutter to the gutter. It was reattached with tape, and the tape is a six sixteenth (6/16") track running vertically at slightly different angles on the sheet. Photo available. I have priced this copy accordingly. Laid in is the bindery company's receipt (Yakima WA). It was rebound in 1993 for $9.19, tax included. A tight copy now. The original laid on fabric is an attractive, uniformly near royal blue on a new blue binding. Rocq, California Local History #6004; Howes Mc102 ("Best account of the most harrowing of all overland disasters."); Graff/Colton 2610 ("The ordeal of the Donner Party is one of the most memorable events in the history of overland narratives."). The Graff/Colton copy is the Holliday copy and was bound in black cloth. It appears most copies were bound in brown(ish) cloth. A truly rare book.
