WELCOME TO POW STALAG LUFT 1 - BARTH - GERMANY

Raleigh: Edwards & Broughton, 1947. First Edition. Hardcover. Good+. Item #5003065

1st printing. Pictorial paper over boards. (74pp). Illustrated with full-page Kriegie cartoons produced by the authors. This Prisoner of War book, published probably between 1947 & 1950, depicts with both humor & gravity what life was like in the German POW camp in Barth, Germany, on the Baltic Sea. "'Krieg' is the German word for war. A prisoner of war was known as a 'Kriegie.'" Sources say around 9,000 airmen were interned there, mainly U. S. airmen, but also from Canada, Great Britain, Russia, etc. In mid-May, 1945, it was evacuated. Laid into the book is a color photocopy of the camp ID card of prisoner of war, K_____ B_____, whom presumably was the original owner of the book. His portrait, with POW info on a board over his chest, is on the ID. Good+ condition. Moderate soil. Very slight separation between gatherings at one place. The blank ffep is clipped in a long narrow triangle along the top edge, 3/4" at fore edge. We have decided not to mark down this point unfairly. Very, very scarce.
