THE LION & THE UNICORN (Signed, & with special laid in ephemera)

London: Collins, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine / Very Good+. Item #5003055

2nd impression. Cloth. 349pp. Presentation copy to H____ S____. Laid in is a printed folder (4pp) for a "Luncheon in honour of Sir Arthur Bryant... to mark the publication of his book 'The Lion and the Unicorn'..." This luncheon was "Organised by Foyles Bookshop 125 Charing Cross Road London..." "Foyles Luncheons" is printed at the top of the folder. The Chairman was Lieut-General Sir John Glubb. Printed on the folder is a 2pp+ list of guests. The back of the folder shows a diagram of the "Plan for Top Table" with names of prominent guests arranged around 3 sides: lords, counts & countesses, an ambassador, etc.. Laid in also is a ballroom slip signed by the recipient of the book. She does not appear to be listed in the guests list, but surely she must have been there, possibly as the "guest" of another person with the same last name. However, this is a 2nd impression copy. Fine copy in dj with an archivally closed 1 1/2" tear & another 1/2" closed tear. Very light soiling, if any, to the dj. Not price-clipped. The contents of this book appear to be historical & philosophical historiography reflections of the past as well as the present.
