GREAT PLAINS OR WESTERN HARVEST PHOTO - EXCEPTIONAL

n.p: n.p., 1900. Original. Hardcover. Fine. Item #2507019

FABULOUS but unidentified photo of frontier haying (we presume) camp. 7 3/16" x 9 ¾" b/w photo mounted on black 9" x 11 x ¾" mat. This is a remarkably descriptive and sharp photo of either a group of men and women gathered in front of what appears to be a traveling cook house, with some sitting on a wagon. In the doorway of the cookhouse are two women, well-dressed for the photo, wearing caps. Among the group of 25 boys, men, and one young girl is, third from the left, the gentleman who we presume is probably the owner / manager / boss / ramrod. Is he checking up on the progress of what is going on? The man third from right appears to be African-American. The girl in the photo, also wearing a woman's work cap, sits on the shoulders of a couple of guys. The apparel in this photo includes overalls, trousers with suspenders, wide-brimmed hats, and jackets. They all appear to have clean faces, so maybe they are washed up for dinner? The romantic historian in me wants to know who they are, where they are, and what they have been doing. The landscape in the distance appears to show a field with a harvest cut line running across it. It is hard to say if the objects in the mid-distance on the right are hay shocks. A treasure if you can handle the mystery. Near fine condition. Photo to be uploaded or upon request.
