LEGEND OF THE DELAWARE: An Historical Sketch of Tom Quick, to Which is Added THE WINFIELD FAMILY; also, MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS AND ARTICLES (Signed)

Chicago: Knight & Leonard Co., Printers, 1887. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Item #2411003

1st printing. Cloth. Gilt spine title. 195pp. Illus. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. INSCRIBED by the author in ink on front blank leaf: "Thos. J. Reeve Esq. / Compliments / of Wm. Bross / Chicago / 1888." Decorated endpapers. Laid in is an old, presumably 1889 (August 23) newspaper clipping with the story, "TOM QUICK'S MONUMENT: Will Commemorate the Fact that He WAS a Great Indian Killer." Bross was a founder of the Chicago Tribune and a Lt. Gov. of Illinois. In this book he recalls early Indian warfare in Pennsylvania, and in particular, "Slayer of Indians" Tom Quick (which some in history have accused of being a murderer of Indians). Of the section, The Winfield Family, he says, "The story of the Winfield Family got in print by mistake; but is let stand for whom it may concern." Other chapters: "Immortality--All Life Conditionally Immortal," "Punishment--Its Necessity and Use," The Thirteenth Amendment," "Commercial Crises," "Stanley's African Explorations--'The Dark Continent.'" A very good, actually near fine copy. This first edition is very scarce. Original presentation or autograph of the author makes this a rare find, indeed.
