BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE (English edition printed in Taiwan!)

Taipei, Taiwan: Ming-Huei Chen, 1971. First Thus. Hardcover. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #1805015

Pirated edition printed from plates of the 1972 2nd printing. Maroon-red cloth. Dimensions (14.5 cm x 21 cm) smaller than the authorized American edition than the American edition. 487pp. Illus. Note. Bibliography. Index. Printed in a thinner grade paper than the standard edition. This edition is published in English, but the publishing information on the copyright page is printed in Chinese. The February, 2007, issue of FIRSTS: The Book Collectors' Magazine, has an excellent article by Charles Michaus on the pirated books printed in Taiwan, between the late 1950s into the 1980s. Many of these books were brought back to the U. S. during the Vietnam War by military personnel; many were purchased direct by colleges students in the U. S. They eventually became illegal to import. However, well-established is the fact that these books are legal to sell (as is this copy) on the secondary market and have become sought for collectors wanting as many editions of a book as they can acquire. The information in Chinese in this copy was translated by a personal friend who is originally from Taiwan and whose first language is Chinese (of Taiwan). Thus translated, the info on the copyright page gives publisher (Ming-Huei Chen), "Issued by" (Royal Figure Light Co., Ltd.), address, phone number, printer, printer's address & phone number. In Chinese (according to my translator) is also stated "first edition 1974." A near fine copy in a vg dj which has a large price clip. The dj was printed from the original Knopf dj, and has remarkably similar color to the ink. Your bookseller has not previously seen or heard of this printing. Very, very scarce and probably most desirable for someone collecting various editions of the groundbreaking book.
