Blind-stamp decorated & gilt-stamped, pictorial 4to cloth. 127pp of text. 107 plates with tissue guards, including nine drawings in color showing horse musculature. Preface by Leland Stanford, who hired the now famous photographer, known for his California landscapes, to prove whether or not all four hooves of a horse are at some point in the air while trotting. A seminal book in the history of photography & also equine studies. Some wear to extremities; some peeling of cloth at two spine corners; rubbing on back cover (long line & spots); some tissue guards with some creases; some slight pulls/short tears at binding on some leaves; three leaves with some burning from laid in newspaper clippings; front hinge separation after preliminary blank page has been archivally closed. Overall a good copy. Very scarce & desirable.
