JESSE JAMES WAS MY NEIGHBOR (author's letter laid in)

NY: Duell, Sloan Pearce, 1949. Hardcover. Fine / Fair. Item #1506031

2nd printing. Cloth. 313pp. Index. Pencil fos/gift on ffep. Laid into this copy is a short, but wonderful T.L.S. (typed letter signed) by Croy on a small-sized printed letterhead, the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth (England). It has his corrections in ink, but reads: "April 23rd - Friend: I'm going to pull down, just as Jesse would have done, on the person who said the book was unobtainable. I'm telling the publishers to write you. I've (sic) extremely thankful the book has done so well. I was afraid a book about an outlaw would not go, but it has. Yours till General MacArthur Loves Truman. H. C." Also laid in is a small news clipping of the death of 109 year old James Russell Davis, who testified that as a member of the James gang he could identify J. Frank Dalton as Jesse James. Croy grew up close by the James family. "It seems to me I have always known the James Story." He interviewed many interesting people for this book. Fine copy in dj with several chips. Great laid in, if brief, material. Adams 150 #39, 6-guns 523.
