Clarke & Co., Cinn., 1893, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Item #0401032

Cloth. 274pp + 74pp Appendix, "Description List of Robert Clarke & Co.'s Publications" & Index. 7,488 entries. This is a fantastic used & new book catalogue published by a well-known Cincinnati book dealer at the time of what has come to be known as "the close of the frontier" in William Jackson Turner's essay. This publisher not to be confused with the famous Arthur H. Clark Co.. Arranged by states & subjects (War of 1812, Mexican War, Rebellion, Confederate Publications, Biography, British American, Mexico, Arctic, Central America, Slavery & the Negro, Religious Communities, Poetry, Indians & Archaeology, Indian Languages, etc., etc... Contents include almost all of the midwestern states & territories, & some eastern & New England states. (but, for instance while including Texas & Kansas, does not have Indian Territory). Read the prices of now exceedingly rare books & weep, but remember that you'd be dead by now if you were buying books then. Lewis & Clark Journals, McKinney - Hall 3 vols with portfolio, Emory Mexican Boundary Report, Ives: Report on the Colo. River, Wilkes 5 vols Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition, they're all there and cheaper than a parking ticket. Certainly not an exhaustive catalogue by any means, but chock full of great books with useful bibliographical material as many entries have a paragraph explanation. Hinges broken; some pages with top edge tear up to 1". Rare.
