THE FRASER

NY: Rinehart & Co, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / Good. Item #xxx024

1st printing of the American edition. Red cloth with blindstamp of the publisher on the front cover. 368pp. Illus. Bibliography. Index. Former owner's signature on ffep and some penciled notes on the same. Stewart Holbrook's long review in the New York Herald Tribune is cut out and affixed (pasted) to the rear paste down and folded. Now, we present a mystery. Affixed to the verso of the rear free endpaper (facing the newspaper article) and with flaps folded is a dj for the same book, but showing the price of $4.00 on the flap. Both American & Canadian firsts sport the price of $4.50. However, the Holbrook review has $4.00 for the book! The top edge of this extra dj is trimmed back a bit (1/4"). Did the publisher intend to publish at $4.00 retail and change its mind and print the same dj with the higher price? We don't know. Oh, and the original owner of the copy wrote $4.00 on the ffep! The copy is vg with a little fading to the spine; the dj is chipped and has a crease down the front panel. The main chip is to the publisher name at the bottom, a triangle chip removing most of the name. No longer common, and this copy ideal for the collector who wants out of the ordinary copies. Oh, yes, and a wonderful addition of the R of A Series, this one being that historical British Columbia river.
