MADAME DE STAEL Her Friends, and Her Influence in Politics and Literature

Chapman & Hall, London, 1889, 1889. First Thus. Hardcover. Very Good+. Item #5007038

1st edition in English, translated & slightly abridged by J. E. Gordon Cumming from "Frau von Stael - Ihre Freunds und ehre Bedeutung in Pokitik und Literature". Three volumes in half red leather & pink marbled boards. Matching marbled endpapers. 464pp, 546pp, 609pp. Frontispiece: Madame de Stael. Gilt trimmed along the leather sections. Spines elegantly gilded with decorative devices & title/author. Gilt letter "N" on lower spines, and gilt bees on top & bottom of spines. The latter are, of course, emblematic of the empires of Napoleon I & Napoleon III. De Stael, born Anne Louise Germaine Necker. Historical information has her banned from France by Napoleon I. Her writings & novels further infuriated him. This set in better than very good condition, the exception being that on the final index page of volume III, there is a very short edge tear (1/2") closed & collateral creases. Parallel creases to following blank page before endpaper. They have been somewhat pressed out. Some, but not all of the upper fore corners have just enough wear so that that the boards underneath are exposed. A most attractive set with appropriate gilding to the subject. Very scarce.
