Maddox, Gov. Lester

LETTER

Atlanta: 1971. Soft cover. Very Good+. Item #1003082

Not a book. Original T.L.S. (typed letter, signed) from Georgia Governor Lester Maddox to a bookseller in Spokane, WA. Dated Jan. 12, 1971, Maddox responds to a query following Maddox's appearance on the Dick Cavett Show (12/18/1970). After promises from the show that it would be "fair and honest", Maddox walked off the show because "I simply can't stand hypocrisy, dishonesty and deceit." (the subject was segregation). "I will not hesitate to expose those who live by such standards, whether they be in government, education, religion, the new media or elsewhere." He compliments the inquirer & assures him that "I will continue to try to do more for my country which has done so much for me." According to internet information, a few nights later Maddox returned to the show. After selling fried chicken, Maddox served as Gov. of GA 1967-71, & his obituary (d. 2003) described him as "one of the civil rights era's most unusual characters." Fine one-page item printed on Maddox's Executive Department Letterhead. Matching postal-canceled envelope included.

Price: $165.00
